Tips for Preparing Siblings for Newborn Photo Sessions // Crystal Lake Newborn Photographer
Preparing siblings for a newborn photo session can be simple — In this blog post I share my top tips for preparing those older siblings!
Preparing siblings for a newborn photo session can help ensure that the photos turn out beautifully and that everyone has a positive experience. Here are some of my top tips to help you get big brother or sister ready:
1. Explain the Session to Siblings: Depending on the age of your older child or children, take some time to explain what a photo session is and why it’s happening. Let them know that it’s an opportunity to capture special moments with the new baby.
2. Set Realistic Expectations: Make sure your older child understands that the photo session may take some time, and there will be moments where they need to be patient and cooperative. Be clear about what behavior you expect from them during the session.
3. Involve Them in the Planning: If your older child is old enough, involve them in the planning process. Ask for their input on outfits, props, or poses. This can make them feel more invested in the session.
4. Choose the Right Time: Schedule the photo session at a time when your older child is well-rested and generally in a good mood. Avoid times when they are likely to be hungry or tired.
5. Bring Comfort Items: If your older child has a favorite toy or blanket, bring it along to the session. This can help them feel more comfortable and secure in an unfamiliar setting.
6. Practice Posing: Before the session, practice some simple poses with your older child at home. This can help them feel more confident during the actual session.
7. Have Snacks and Drinks Available: Bring some snacks and drinks to keep your older child energized and hydrated during the session. This can help prevent meltdowns due to hunger or thirst.
8. Be Patient and Flexible: Understand that children can be unpredictable. If your older child is not cooperating or becomes upset, be patient and flexible. Allow for breaks if needed.
9. Reward and Praise: After the session is over, praise your older child for their cooperation and good behavior. Consider offering a small reward or treat as a thank-you for their participation.
10. Include Family Shots: Don’t forget to include shots of the entire family, including the siblings, parents, and the newborn. These photos capture the essence of your growing family and can be cherished for years to come.
11. Stay Calm and Relaxed: Children often pick up on their parents’ emotions. If you remain calm and relaxed during the session, it can help your older child feel more at ease.
Remember that newborn photo sessions can take time, so be patient and allow for breaks as needed. The goal is to capture beautiful memories that your family will treasure for years, and with the right preparation, it can be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
