I get asked how to select outfits for newborn photos all the time!

This is an exciting part of preparing for your baby’s first professional photo session and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect outfits:

1. Keep it Simple: Newborns are naturally cute, and you want the focus to be on them, not on elaborate outfits. Simple, soft, neutral and timeless outfits work best for newborn sessions.
2. Consider Comfort: Your baby’s comfort is a top priority. Choose outfits made from soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic materials like cotton or bamboo. Avoid clothing with rough seams, buttons, or tags that might irritate their delicate skin.
3. Go Neutral: Neutral colors like white, cream, gray, and pastel shades work well for newborn sessions. They create a clean and timeless look and won’t distract from your baby’s features. The best part is that neutrals work well for the whole family’s outfits and never go out of style.
4. Showcase Personal Items: If you have special heirloom items, blankets, or clothing passed down through the family, bring them to incorporate into the photos. These items can add sentimental value to the session.
5. Plan for Swaddles: Swaddling creates a cozy and timeless look. I have many neutral swaddles on hand that we can use. A simple onesie is perfect for baby to wear underneath the swaddles.
